Meet Verstikland’s main antagonist, Holbrand, a troubled vandal of a teenager. This illustration took shape in collaborative style with Jean de Wet, an uber-talented artist working at Am I Collective. The illustration began with a Jean’s concept, drawing and colour palate. I then went on to paint the piece.

Verstikland is one of Am I Collective‘s self-initiated, experimental projects. Go and take a look at some more saucy character interpretations of Holbrand and his equally delinquent friend, Vinger on their site.

Here’s a sneak peek into the life of Tannie Sannie…. Her husband disappeared from Verstikland some years back and no soul knows what happened to the poor man, originally the town minister. On some lonely nights, Tannie Sannie even serves an extra plate at the dinner table for him, hoping in vain for her missing hubbie’s return.

Meet Tannie Sannie and her strikingly attractive and intelligent son, Klip. Tannie Sannie is a member of the ‘HVG woman’s group’, the ‘Crossword Puzzle Club’ and the ‘Maltese Poodle Taxidermia Society’ in a place called ‘Verstikland’.

So, I’ve been off the radar for over a year now so thought i should give a VERY brief summary of what’s been going on.

1. Worked as a gallery administrator and designer at SMAC Art Gallery in Stellenbosch with a team of hard-working, creative, passionate individuals (unfortunately didn’t get round to creating many illustrative works during this time).

Something cool that happened there: I got to design and be a part in the co-ordination of Sue Pam Grant’s exhibition catalogue, Fugitive Lines.

Latest cool thing going on there: Jake Aikman’s solo Exhibition, Proximity.

2. In March 2011 I started working at Am I Collective Illustration and Animation Studio in Cape Town with a different lot of creative, passionate individuals (here I get to be an illustrator all day long).
